Ever since Caroline won the meatball cookoff on The Rachel Ray Show in May of 2010, the rest of the cast and their family members have taunted Teresa about it to this day, almost three years later. On January 27, 2013, Melissa tweeted about frying meatballs just two hours after Teresa tweeted a photo of Joe making her recipe, “Juicy Joe’s meatballs.” A few weeks earlier, on January 6, Lysa Simpson tweeted Caroline Manzo, saying, “I’m going old school and frying the meatballs.”

Someone asked Melissa if she was tweeting to compete with Teresa, and she said that some people over analyze (I’m paraphrasing, but it pretty much what she said).

During season 4, episode 2, Jacqueline was on camera frying meatballs, and the entire cast was at her home watching and talking smack about the Giudices as they waited for them to arrive.

Since those fried 1/16th Italian meatballs get around, they are making an appearance at Jacqueline’s get-together where fried meatballs are the main dish. Teresa Giudice is a best-selling cookbook author, which Caroline Manzo and the rest of the cast resent, so they like to rub it in Teresa’s face that Caroline won the meatball cookoff contest on The Rachel Ray Show in 2010. Note: Rachel Ray judged the sandwich contest between the men’s and women’s teams on Celebrity Apprentice, which aired in February 2012: the women submitted a sandwich purported to be Teresa’s (Teresa says otherwise), and Rachel choose the men’s sandwich as the winner. Perhaps Rachel Ray is doing Andy’s bidding just like Wendy Williams, Kelly Ripa, Anderson Cooper, Kathy Griffin and Us Weekly.

The “Olive Garden Italian” quip was written by a producer of The Rachel Ray Show. Teresa included the joke in her cookbook, which Caroline used as an excuse to harass Teresa, starting in the season 3 finale, when the cookbook became the center of attention. The cookbook scene in the season 3 finale was filmed at the start of season 4, but Bravo moved it to the final episode of season 3 (Albie explained this in an interview) to end the season with conflict, and to use it as a continuing storyline for season 4.

In her Bravo blog, Teresa explained the story behind the “Olive Garden” comment:

Since the Season 3 finale of The Real Housewives of New Jersey, Teresa Giudice‘s joke about Caroline Manzo being “as Italian as The Olive Garden” has been at the center of a lot of the drama on the Bravo reality show. The Manzo family wasn’t laughing when they read it, but did they know about the joke before the book came out? FINALLY, Teresa explains it all.

“In 2010, I began writing Fabulicious! Teresa’s Family Cookbook,” Giudice explains in her Bravo blog. “I had just filmed a Housewives scene with Caroline and Jacqueline and cried, telling them how they were my family too. And Caroline and I appeared on The Rachel Ray Show together for a meatball ‘throw down.’ We were supposed to good-naturedly ‘trash-talk’ each other. Caroline said I had to ‘disguise my meatballs with gravy,’ and that her meatballs were going to ‘kick my meatballs’ butts!’

“I literally couldn’t think of any fake insults except, ‘A meatball without sauce? Who does that?’” says Teresa. And in her defense, if you saw her during the improv challenge on Celebrity Apprentice, you know that she doesn’t exactly think very quickly on her feet.

“Then, one of the Rachel Ray producers came up with a line I thought was pretty funny,” Giudice continues. “‘Caroline’s as Italian as The Olive Garden.’ The idea was that since I was conceived in Italy and Italian is my first language, that I cook the traditional way. Caroline’s family is Italian-American, like The Olive Garden, and that’s how she cooks. I bake my meatballs in sauce; she fries hers with no sauce”

According to Teresa, she and Caroline “laughed throughout the show,” and the reason that she recycled the joke in the cookbook was because she was including her meatball recipe and referenced the Rachel Ray meatball challenge, adding that while she’s not a fan of The Olive Garden, “I am, however, a huge fan of Caroline Manzo.”

It wasn’t until after the cookbook was released that Caroline and her family took issue with the comment.

This comment about Caroline being as Italian as the Olive Garden was written by a producer, not Teresa. Teresa also explained in her Bravo blog:

I didn’t take offense when they were all making fun of Skinny Italian on camera because I knew they were joking. What I wrote about the Manzos in Fabulicious! was the same thing: a joke. And not even a mean joke, a repeated joke that was made up for a fake feud on the “Rachel Ray” show. And I think my millions of compliments to the Manzos in the book make it very, very clear I was kidding. Actually, since the book came out, not one person, not ONE, has ever written me or said to me at one of my book signings that what I wrote about Caroline was mean. And I sold a lot of books. I think everyone gets it about my books.

RHONJ Production Supervisor Says Jacqueline Laurita’s Anger Stems from Failed Endorsement Deals, Which She Blames on Teresa Giudice

Fame-Whorgas received from the interviewer the following partial transcript of an interview with a former post production supervisor for RHONJ:

Q: “So can you tell me about your role on the RHONJ without giving away who you are”?

A: “It’s fine, my contract has finished. I worked on season 3 and 4 of RHONJ as a post production supervisor for 15 episodes.”

Q: “Can you explain why you no longer work with the RHONJ? Does it have anything to do with the rumors that the production team was fired due to a conflict of interest?”

A: “Not true at all, I can’t speak for everyone, um, there are quiet a few of the same team returning for season 5, but I was offered a role on another show and decided to leave for my career; no one was fired for a conflict of interest though.”

Q: “So how ‘real’ is the show? We discussed before (in a private conversation) about the various blog rumours; can you clear anything up?”

A: “Well, if you give me specifics, I can try.”

Q: “I’m curious about the Caroline/Teresa feud. Was she really that angry that Teresa wrote those comments in her cookbook?”

A: (laughing) “Oh come on, at the start of the season the production team sits down and gives a general overview of where we want the storyline for the show to go. ALL of the wives are in on this. We discuss popular storylines from the season before, story lines that need tying up, and also ways of threading in new storylines that look organic to the story. Do you really think we spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on just following these woman around with no plan? No, the season and the storyline has a basic outline from the first day.”

Q: “So your saying there is no feud?”

A: “I’m saying the feud you are being fed is for television only and there are bigger issues there.”

Q: “Then why are we not being told what the bigger drama is? Wouldn’t it be better to show that than manufacturing the drama?”

A: “It’s up to the wives what they choose to put out into the public forum; nothing is forced on them.”

Q: “What about Jacqueline and Teresa?”

A: “We knew at the end of season 3 that their friendship was ending; the main reason, I was told, for the feud was because Jacqueline was offered several endorsement deals (including a teeth whitener and a real fruit-based alchohol), and Teresa organised deals for herself with similar products which turned off the company wanting to invest in Jax and the housewives’ name.”

Q: “Well, why was this not mentioned throughout the season? Why are we getting this confusing story that makes Jacqueline look crazy? Why not explain this to the viewers?”

A: “Jacqueline’s ‘character’ wouldn’t have endorsement deals; it didn’t feel right for the character. Jacqueline (the character) is a loving home mother who is trying to raise her children; we couldn’t go from doting housewife to celebrity endorsement maker; it wouldn’t feel organic.”

In relation to Cat Rodriguez sending a tweet to Teresa:

A: “She would of been asked to make it public by the producers. They are aware of the what is being said on Twitter and blogs. Cat hates Teresa and Teresa knows it. I don’t know for a fact, but I can bet Cat was told to appear mutual to squash the rumors and Teresa would of had to go along with it.”

Regarding the last statement above, Teresa acknowledges Andy as “her boss” and has said more that once that she is a “good employee”, so she, of course, would go along with making public a tweet telling Cat Rodriguez that she “misses her too”.

I was told that I would receive the rest of the transcript, but I don’t know when. I cannot disclose the names of the interviewer or interviewee; however, I can say that I received this directly from the interviewer: this person, the one who conducted the interview, is related to the former post production supervisor.

“I was asked by my country’s main news website to write a piece on the reality of reality television. My cousin worked on RHONJ, so I asked for an interview. The interview was only given because RHONJ does not screen in my country, and I promised anonymity. We also don’t have any BRAVO shows on television here. I called my cousin in Washington and spoke for 20 minutes before realizing I would have to watch the RHONJ to understand what was going on and who was who. So I went online and watched every episode and called back a few weeks later. The Manzo’s have attempted to capitalize on their ‘celebrity’ by marketing Caroline’s handbags, the Brownstone sauce, and BLK bottled water. The handbags and the sauce were a bust, and BLK, which they are still promoting, is not the huge success they expected it would be (and they were sued for allegedly stealing the idea).

“I think the Manzos/Lauritas wanted Teresa to invest her name and money in BLK. When she refused, they viewed her as a traitor… they have turned on her not out of jealousy, but as payback: they set out to show her that without their support she wouldn’t be where she is. Only it’s backfiring… Teresa refused to invest her name, brand or money in their get rich-quick scheme, which was invented as a desperate attempt to save Jac and Chris, who are in major financial trouble. They believe since they were always there for Teresa — built her up, stood beside her — that she owed them this. She refused, and they all went after her. They believe they hold the power of the viewers. Kim G is being used now by Jac. Jac has been missing and quiet on Twitter, allowing Kim to do her dirty work. Yet, people STILL see through them. “I think the insults directed at Caroline for being one-sixteenth Italian (which is not true at all) and her ‘authentic’ meatball comments were to discredit Caroline as an Italian cook for two reasons. First, because she lost a meatball tasting contest to Caroline on the Rachael Ray show which annoyed her. Also there had been talk since day one of Caroline and our family doing a family cookbook, and in my opinion Teresa was trying to plant a seed in the readers mind.
