Ever since Caroline won the meatball cookoff on The Rachel Ray Show in May of 2010, the rest of the cast and their family members have taunted Teresa about it to this day, almost three years later. On January 27, 2013, Melissa tweeted about frying meatballs just two hours after Teresa tweeted a photo of Joe making her recipe, “Juicy Joe’s meatballs.” A few weeks earlier, on January 6, Lysa Simpson tweeted Caroline Manzo, saying, “I’m going old school and frying the meatballs.”

Note: Rachel Ray judged the sandwich contest between the men’s and women’s teams on Celebrity Apprentice, which aired in February 2012: the women submitted a sandwich purported to be Teresa’s (Teresa says otherwise), and Rachel choose the men’s sandwich as the winner. Perhaps Rachel Ray is doing Andy’s bidding just like Wendy Williams, Kelly Ripa, Anderson Cooper, Kathy Griffin and Us Weekly.
The “Olive Garden Italian” quip was written by a producer of The Rachel Ray Show. Teresa included the joke in her cookbook, which Caroline used as an excuse to harass Teresa, starting in the season 3 finale, when the cookbook became the center of attention. The cookbook scene in the season 3 finale was filmed at the start of season 4, but Bravo moved it to the final episode of season 3 (Albie explained this in an interview) to end the season with conflict, and to use it as a continuing storyline for season 4.
In her Bravo blog, Teresa explained the story behind the “Olive Garden” comment:
Since the Season 3 finale of The Real Housewives of New Jersey, Teresa Giudice‘s joke about Caroline Manzo being “as Italian as The Olive Garden” has been at the center of a lot of the drama on the Bravo reality show. The Manzo family wasn’t laughing when they read it, but did they know about the joke before the book came out? FINALLY, Teresa explains it all.
“In 2010, I began writing Fabulicious! Teresa’s Family Cookbook,” Giudice explains in her Bravo blog. “I had just filmed a Housewives scene with Caroline and Jacqueline and cried, telling them how they were my family too. And Caroline and I appeared on The Rachel Ray Show together for a meatball ‘throw down.’ We were supposed to good-naturedly ‘trash-talk’ each other. Caroline said I had to ‘disguise my meatballs with gravy,’ and that her meatballs were going to ‘kick my meatballs’ butts!’
“I literally couldn’t think of any fake insults except, ‘A meatball without sauce? Who does that?’” says Teresa. And in her defense, if you saw her during the improv challenge on Celebrity Apprentice, you know that she doesn’t exactly think very quickly on her feet.
“Then, one of the Rachel Ray producers came up with a line I thought was pretty funny,” Giudice continues. “‘Caroline’s as Italian as The Olive Garden.’ The idea was that since I was conceived in Italy and Italian is my first language, that I cook the traditional way. Caroline’s family is Italian-American, like The Olive Garden, and that’s how she cooks. I bake my meatballs in sauce; she fries hers with no sauce”
According to Teresa, she and Caroline “laughed throughout the show,” and the reason that she recycled the joke in the cookbook was because she was including her meatball recipe and referenced the Rachel Ray meatball challenge, adding that while she’s not a fan of The Olive Garden, “I am, however, a huge fan of Caroline Manzo.”
It wasn’t until after the cookbook was released that Caroline and her family took issue with the comment.

I didn’t take offense when they were all making fun of Skinny Italian on camera because I knew they were joking. What I wrote about the Manzos in Fabulicious! was the same thing: a joke. And not even a mean joke, a repeated joke that was made up for a fake feud on the “Rachel Ray” show. And I think my millions of compliments to the Manzos in the book make it very, very clear I was kidding. Actually, since the book came out, not one person, not ONE, has ever written me or said to me at one of my book signings that what I wrote about Caroline was mean. And I sold a lot of books. I think everyone gets it about my books.
First I want to say my father came from sicily and I was taught by my grandmother to cook the meatballs in the sauce. Who fries meatballs? They would be greasy and dry. When cooked in sauce they are very juicy. I bet that tasting contest was rigged. I get so mad when I think of CaroLIE, Melissa, her sisters and Jac and the envy they have for Teresa’s life. I have a couple of sisters just like them and believe me they are so bitter and unhappy. I live alone and am very happy and content with my life. I always see the cup as half full. People like CaroLIE Melissa and Jac see the cup as half empty because their lives are so empty. I just realized something. I think Teresa is from the Campania (sp?) region of Italy which is near Naples? Does anyone remember where Joe and her hometown was? Anyway, the reason why I ask is because I was taught by my mother-in-law who was from the Naples area of Italy how to make meatballs. I bake the meatballs (tri meat – beef, veal and pork) in the oven until they are slightly golden – not fully cooked – turning them continually so they remain round and do not get flat sides – and then put them in the sauce to continue cooking through. Not to brag but my mother-in-laws meatballs were LEGEND and I have been able to duplicate them! They are not only delicious – they are perfectly round too!
This is so petty – Melissa says her meatballs are “Italian style” and Caroline says her meatballs are “Italian style”; well, so are Teresa’s!! It’s about the region of Italy someone is from – northern Italy cuisine is different than southern Italian cooking. That’s also probably why there is such a debate about gravy versus sauce!

lol I will do it! I will probably be making sauce and meatballs next weekend and I do not fry mine, my recipe is similiar to Teresas and they are awesome meatballs…fry them? if my grandmother was alive she would tell ya, you do not fry meatballs, it dries them out and ruins to the flavor!
My ex is Italian and I learned how to make sauce, which of course includes meatballs, from his mother. I do the same as someone said above… bake them in the oven then put them in the sauce which simmers for hours on the stove… the meatballs melt in your mouth. Frying them makes them come out more like a meatball shaped hamburger. Not saying they’re not good, but I haven’t met an Italian yet (I live in Jersey and was with an Italian for 19 years) who fried their meatballs.

Im with you IamNobodysHW. My parents were both born in Italy one from North one from South and we’ve never ever had meatballs fried. We always make them and cook them in the sugo. FFS CarHo cant even speak or understand Italian let alone know the correct way to make meatballs.

Rereading this reminds me just how ridiculous the meatball feud was. Either the Manzos were looking for an excuse to turn on Teresa or there was something else that really pissed them off that they won’t tell us, so they’re going with the cookbook thing. For me the cookbook thing as to why they were mad, just didn’t make sense. So finally I said I screw it and bought the book. There was nothing wrong in that book. Had it not been for that I probably wouldn’t have bought it and now I have all 3 and the 4 on pre-order.

Yes, Jeannie, I have to agree. For me, it was the way they all turned on Teresa this last season that inspired me to purchase all three cook books, four sets, one for me, my daughter and two daughters-in-law. I also purchased Milania, which I love. The Milania products are very much like the Fekkai products, but cheaper. That is why I wish there would be a shampoo.
And now, so many people are praying for Bryan. There is a master plan in place (not Andy’s).

I couldn’t stay off for long…love the justice. I also have all three, and preordered fourth. I’m not Italian. I lived in Italia, 3 regions, am mostly Irish. My uncle is 100% Italian. (My 100% Swedish grandfather was meatballs we used), until I made Teresa’s. Most of my mixed Irish/Italian cook the way the neighborhood and families cook. Old school.! I think all the kids are cute. It strikes me odd that the Marcos could go on and on about how important Family is, but they not only stood by while Kathy and Melissa went after Teresa, they had a hand in that destruction of *Family*.

If all they’ve got are meatballs then they’ve got problems. 9 /10ths of the audience can detect pettiness and with all the little digs, they’ll shut down any glimmer of sympathy for Melissa. Just like the sprinkle cookie comment at Antonia’s birthday – a season after that food controversy was released. The Marcos keep up the little jabs and Teresa’s the one accused of not letting go of the past! Remember the ambush on the deck ( did I mention I’m revisiting the series pretty much out of boredom), Jac was going on and on about Teresa letting go of the past in regard to Danielle contacting her to expose her exchanges with Melissa. She was labeled as a terrible, vindictive “friend” from whom she had to distance herself due to what Danielle, two years earlier, had done to her, then spent the rest of the season complaining that Teresa wasn’t talking to her and she didn’t know why. That was a major game changer and yet, these women won’t let go over meatballs.
And they think the people who comment on blogs or twitter are pathetic (Joe Gorga when Missy gets bad feedback over her song via twitter comments – apparently we all need to get laid!)
But they’re joking right because they’re the only ones who can joke!
PS If I were Teresa, I wouldn’t have let one single thing the Manzo spawn said about her and her cookbooks and children slide, but I guess we shouldn’t forget that these people basically called Ashley a POS and refer negatively to their sister/daughter.
One things for sure, the quip in the book about Melissa copying can no longer be disputed! There’s a million products out there and she can’t find something unique to promote – I can think of 3 right off the bat that would fit her cultivated image, it’s not that hard!
PS there’s no way in the world that I would let anyone use my children for media attention like Melissa allows her children to be used by her sisters. I continue to be amazed at how stupid Melissa is. She had all these skeletons in her closet and she still came out with guns blazing against her husband’s sister. She really missed a golden opportunity. At the end of Season 2, most of us were done with Teresa. Her attacks on Danielle were over the top and I know the tide turned against her. But then Melissa came on in all her arrogance and nasty manipulative conniving behaviors became the 6th housewife on the show and bam. Everyone turns on her and sides with Teresa. She’s an idiot. She should have been humble and sweet and she could have had the viewers by the balls.

She went to hospital to pay respects, but within days knew how her parents were being treated…I would give her more credit, and Danielle/Melissa took a passionate, loyal daughter and sister out of contract with her explosion. I am starting a tiny little bit feel a bit sorry for him PLEASE DONT HATE ME I have a son a few years younger than him and 2 daughters, I asked myself if I could would forgive him if he behaved like this oh its been hard to say yes but as my only son I would, forgive but not forget.
My mother inlaw said to me one day (its a english saying and I forgot most of it) YOUR SON IS YOUR SON TILL HE TAKES ON A WIFE, if someones knows it please let me know.
I remember T saying he was unlucky in love before the BITCH and COMPANY came on the scene, sounds like she was there right when he was hurting over a break-up.
I have read johnnythe greek and others saying he was a good man hard worker etc he can’t go anywhere he has 3 children, sometimes when he and T were talking you could read his mind oh sister what have I done.
We know he caught her in the arms of another man, they all must have known about it (FAMILY) I mean and bravo remember the private conversation before filming he and T had about her leaving Joe there is more to that, that we will never know.
I will go back to my son he had a break-up and fell for another girl a mothers worst nightmare girl, he wouldnt listern to family, friends or the pet dog. We watched his bank account run dry cut a long story short she left when there was no more money, thankyou Jesus.
In recent photos of joe he looks different unhappy I maybe wrong, all her tweets lately dont include him, sisters dont tweet their undying love for him as much.
These are just thoughts and I will let all say CRAZY TASSIE but does anyone else feel a little the same.

I have a situation in my family where someone caused extreme grief with absolutely no regret. That person is no longer a member of the family and there is nothing that person could do to be welcomed back. It is sad – it is heartbreaking and it is like a death only worse for the rest of us.
What I will say to you is you have a good, forgiving, loving heart and your son is lucky to have you for a mother. What a sweet soul you are!
Sweet Jeannie thankyou, we as mums go through so much heartache with our kids from time they are born, to adults. I reread what I posted and it does seem Im joey gorga fan. I know T loves her brother she told us all and he her i believe the scene of them walking hand in hand after surfing tells me there is love there from him.
If I had him for a week I would slap some sense into him, Damage certainly has been done the worst is all those young children.

Unfortunately, lines that shouldn’t be crossed in the Gorga family have been – Joe has crossed a very important one many times and, as gessiewtf said, broken one of the Ten Commandments – Honor thy father and mother. He has betrayed them over and over. Yes, damage has definitely been done – and for that family I fear it is permanent.
Whatever Mr. Gorga’s health issues are,there is no doubt his son’s actions and that his two children are torn apart has exacerbated his problems. Yet, Joe shows no remorse The fact that he just sat there in silence at the Reunion while Kathy hurled her insults about his parents alone is a betrayal.
tassie, the saying is, a son is your son til he takes a wife, a daughter’s your daughter all of her life. I know what you mean about Joe gorga, He’s been laughed at for being slow but its been said before that people wonder if he can read. I do wonder if he has dyslexia or some other mild learning difficulty, This might partly explain Teresa’s incredible protectiveness of him, That wouldn’t affect his ability in business though or explain or excuse his behaviour, I feel like he had his head turned by Melissa, I think she has played him well and maybe now he is hoist by his own petard? Maybe Missy is turning her back on him? I’ve never really thought of him as ALL bad, Not like Missy who is toxic to the toes.

Just a thought whilst I’m rewatching – Joe Giudice. Sure he’s said some things off hand to his wife about her brother when she lets down on him but at every party, at every gathering, he’s in the middle hugging and kissing and supporting Melissa. Remember the speech he gave after her performance at the BLK launch? He turns up to the big things and does his thing. That’s a good partner. You don’t have to like your inlaws but it’s just turning up for your partner. Missy on the other hand is throwing knives left right and centre. Juicy just calls it like he sees it and as stupid as some of the things he’s done and said are, I like him.

I love love love this blog! Thank you for revealing the truth about Melissa & her minions. I’ve been reading this blog since the end of the season 4 reunion. At the beginning of season 3, I was suspicious of Melissa, but as time went on I thought Teresa was the bitch. Now I know why I felt like that… because of Bravo’s editing! They say first impressions are always right and I should have trusted my instincts. What really stood out to me was in the last episode of season 4… teresa confronted Jacqueline stating she must be trying to set her up and Jacqueline just sat there with a stupid, deer in headlights face. Caroline said it was her “A-ha moment”… say whatever you want Caroline, but to me she looked like she got caught being a part of the set up. I bet she thought Teresa was too dumb to figure it out. My family comes from Palarmo ,Siscily ,!” who would never fry,or serve meatballs with out sauce or gravy !! We slow cook them in the sauce so they’re “juicey ” Not dry and crusty !!:-P:-P Justsayen;-)!!
Sunday morning on my way to worship service I stopped by my daughters dorm to drom off spaghetti and homemade Italian meatballs. I bake my meatballs for 15 minutes then place them in a boiler with my marinara sauce and let them simmer for an hour. Teresa was also going back and forth the hospital to help with her father at that time. She didn’t need to be around the flu and possibly pass it on to her father.
Why does he have his wifes panties in a ward for Teresa not going to him when he had the flu when Lookers was out getting her hair done, shopping and attending events. As everyone that hates Teresa always said that Teresa is ONLY his sister not his wife!

I’m not sure if JoGo should care, especially when he said at the reunion that he felt nothing for her when Joe’s phone call was aired. I personally donot believe the short guy was ever in the hospital at all. Just a gut feeling it was created to be subject matter for a new shout down for Joey vs. Teresa. The famewhores would of been twitting pictures from the hospital continuously. I could be wrong though…
I share your opinion. I caught a really bad case of the flu several years ago. I was not hospitalized, but I stayed in bed for a week. It took me several weeks to completely get my strength back. That being said, he was in the hospital on January 10 (his tweet) and out and about on the January 19 (he tweeted the picture of his boy). I just found that strange, especially if he was ill enough to be hospitalized.
And if you look at the photos that were tweeted by Joe and Melissa that day Joe did not look like someone who was recovering from the flu. He looked very healthy and robust.
Two theories – he needed an excuse NOT to go to Gia’s party (his family would be there and perhaps did not want to face his parents) and another excuse to cause a scene at Kim D.’s event (no family to worry about) for the cameras.
After all that has happened and his “no show” at family events, do you think Gia sees her uncle as such a great guy?
I think Gia is smart enough to figure out who Joe Gorga really is. I wish it wasn’t so for her sake. Even if she doesn’t watch the show, I am certain she has heard of all of the cruel and mean things her Uncle and Melissa have done.
It is such a shame the cousins cannot be closer. My cousins and I are still close. Teresa’s girls will have those memories with the Giudice’s cousins. It is unfortunate Melissa’s children will not.

Every other episode last season he was talking about being there for the girls. At the therapy session, it was all about how he was there for Teresa’s when Gia and Gabriella were born but she wasn’t as available for Antonia – Teresa had two kids on her hands! Maybe now he has 3 he can start to appreciate her position! Oh wait sorry I keep forgetting that Melissa’s sisters actually appear to be raising his kid whilst he’s out there hanging with his “boys”.

Oh yet another drama filled day, which is a stay at home wife’s dream! Ok, so I am Italian, Carowhine would call my family “off the boat,” my name is Antonella Rachele L****, my family is from northern italy, Salssomaggiore to be exact! Although my family does sometimes bake their meatballs, we fry them too (its faster and easier, taste just as yummy) but we ALWAYS ALWAYS put them in sauce, never naked meatballs, at least not with pasta (my nonna would disown us).
With that being said, “Love, Italian Style” great yet another book to convince my husband that the way to happy marriage is through me giving him an unending amount of fellatio numerous times a day. GROSS! Who is really going to read a book by a couple whose only been married 7 years?! I’ve been married for 1, guess I better start brainstorming for my book!

Plus, when the Manzos, Laurita and Giudices went to Italy, I am sure Carowhine said something within the lines of not being as Italian as Teresa (or maybe I interpreted like that) but they don’t even speak Italian! I’m sorry but I just went on Mewhore’s twitter and saw a pic of Gino and baby Joey. I hate to say this, but while all three of her kids are absolutely gorgeous! There’s something not right! Joey looks nothing like his brother and sister, he has lighter skin, hair and even eyes! I know that just because they are siblings it doesn’t mean that they have to look alike but something just doesn’t seem to fit right. Let me just say, that I’ve been one for saying to disregard the rumor but between her pics and Lysa’s pic I’m like hmmm??? How can lysa talk about people devoting all their time to an obsession with one person? my god, i didnt think it was even possible for a person to lack THAT much self awareness! lysa is obsessed with her sisters obsession with teresa… Whats sadder than that? wait, i know- using innocent kids as pawns in a sick obsession to emulate tre… blue icee, anyone? both the giudice and gorga children are beautiful and deserve a mom like tre. Melissa was up till all hours of the night last night – she wrote two whole chapters for her fiction novel. I wonder what the subject matter was – sex, makeup, hair, cooking, how to make the Sign of the Cross, parenting advice, how to live on a restricted income, refinancing your home, lying, backstabbing. . . . the possibilities are endless!

Well it seems a certain faction is at it again in Twitterland – New veiled, subtle attacks on Bryan again even though that faction “apologized” about his brain surgery.
The Marco minions making derogatory remarks about Bryan once again, only in a much sneakier way. Oh, they are being very careful with what they are saying with their innuendos and phrasing that can be taken different ways! Trying to portray themselves as empathetic to his situation yet implying he is in cahoots with Johnny and Penny. Questioning if Bryan is “lucid”. Posting a revolting picture with Johnny, Angelo, Bryan and a pop-up of a naked Joe Gorga with a disgusting caption and comment. This particular faction is not so innocent – and attacks without provocation. I find them despicable.
Lysa, Kim, and Melissa must think people are really stupid to not see through this BS. They really want people to believe that they are not behind this barrage of hate. Hate to clue those three “hamsters” in – but they are the stupid ones! And to that certain faction, you are stupid too because you are being used – and once you are no longer useful, they will turn on you too.
Bryan is very, very quiet today – I hope he does not feed into this crap and is placing his energies where they need to be – on himself.

Hi, I’ve never posted here before, but I love reading the posts and other people’s comments. This is actually a little OT, did anyone see on Teresa’s website that she is hosting an official launch party for her Milania hair products next month? She posted to invite salons to see the product and she said that it would be filmed by Bravo and that the entire cast of RHONJ would be there. That makes me skeptical and worried. It’s obviously got to be a Bravo event where the other ladies have to go, and of course I’m sure the tagalongs (Joey, Rosie, and Richie) will also be there, but I feel like they’re going to intentionally cause a scene and rile Teresa up to hurt her business. I feel like thats something Melissa would do.
No I hadn’t heard about it yet. Will be interesting as they didn’t come (weren’t invited) to the Fabilini event.

Let’s talk about Caroling winning the meatball contest. Look who the judges we’re they are people who are probably used to fried foods! They are broadway stars, if they were well established food critics it may hold a little more merit. I am 100% Italian I have an off the boat family and we always bake our meatballs and they are amazing, and Teresa’s recipe is similar to ours. I’m not saying Carolines look bad in any way I’m just saying she cooks very Americanized!
